Construction techniques
Cutting
Leather cutting is done using steel die-cutting presses for bulk orders (consistent precision across hundreds or thousands of units) and hand cutting with templates for sample development and small batches. Pattern layout considers grain direction, stretch characteristics, and defect avoidance.
Stitching
Machine lock stitch is the standard construction method for production efficiency and consistency. Stitch density (stitches per inch) is confirmed during sampling — typically 7–9 SPI for wallets and card holders, 5–7 SPI for bags. Thread colour matching is done during sample approval. Saddle stitch (hand-stitched with two needles) is available for premium products on request — this adds significant time and cost but creates a distinctive, heritage-quality finish.
Edge finishing
- Burnished edge: Edges sanded, treated with gum tragacanth or edge wax, and polished with a heated tool. Creates a smooth, professional finish. Standard for premium wallets.
- Painted edge: Edge paint applied in 2–3 coats with sanding between coats. Available in multiple colours. Creates a clean, defined edge line.
- Folded/turned edge: Leather folded over the edge and stitched or glued. Creates a finished look without visible raw leather. Common for bags and lined wallets.
- Raw edge: Unfinished edge left natural. Used for design effect in rustic or artisanal products.
Hardware installation
Hardware (snaps, rivets, zippers, magnetic closures, buckles, D-rings) is installed using manual and pneumatic presses depending on the hardware type. YKK zippers are available on request; standard good-quality alternatives are used as default. Hardware finishes include nickel, brass, antique brass, gunmetal, and gold tone — confirmed during sampling.
Production capacity and lead times
| Product type | Monthly capacity (approx.) | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Wallets (standard models) | 2,000–5,000 units | 3–5 weeks |
| Card holders | 3,000–8,000 units | 2–4 weeks |
| Bags (crossbody, tote) | 500–1,500 units | 4–8 weeks |
| Accessories (key holders, pouches) | 3,000–10,000 units | 2–3 weeks |
| Gift sets (assembly + packaging) | 1,000–3,000 sets | 3–5 weeks |
Capacity is approximate and varies based on customisation level, colour count, and concurrent order load. Lead times exclude sampling (1–2 weeks additional for first orders).
What we cannot do (transparency)
- We do not manufacture shoes, belts, garments, or furniture
- We do not produce products in synthetic, PU, or any non-genuine leather
- We do not offer same-day or next-day dispatch (we are a manufacturing operation, not a retail warehouse)
- We do not provide free samples (sampling involves material and labour costs that are quoted transparently)
- We cannot guarantee specific tannery batch colours across widely separated orders — leather is a natural material with inherent variation
Materials in detail
Leather sourcing
We source leather from approved tanneries in the Kolkata tannery cluster — one of India's largest concentration of leather processing facilities. The proximity of our production units to these tanneries means material procurement times are typically 3–5 days for standard leather types and colours. Custom colours or specialty finishes (e.g., vegetable-tanned, hand-finished pull-up) may require 7–14 days depending on tannery schedules.
Every leather lot used in production is inspected for: colour consistency (compared to approved sample), thickness uniformity (measured with a leather gauge), surface quality (checking for scars, cuts, insect bites, and other natural defects), and hand feel (softness, flexibility, and drape). Leather lots that do not meet our standards are returned to the tannery.
Leather types and their characteristics
| Type | Animal | Thickness | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-grain | Cow | 0.8–1.2 mm | Natural surface, develops patina, most durable | Premium wallets, high-end accessories |
| Top-grain | Cow | 0.8–1.0 mm | Sanded and finished surface, uniform appearance | Standard wallets, good value-quality balance |
| Corrected-grain | Cow | 0.8–1.0 mm | Embossed texture over treated surface | Cost-effective programs, uniform texture |
| Pull-up | Cow | 1.0–1.4 mm | Wax/oil treated, colour changes when flexed | Heritage and artisanal products |
| Nubuck | Cow/Buffalo | 1.0–1.4 mm | Buffed top grain, velvety surface | Luxury accessories, tactile products |
| Suede | Various | 0.6–1.0 mm | Inner split surface, soft and textured | Linings, interior panels, select products |
| Goat | Goat | 0.6–0.9 mm | Pebbled grain, very soft, lightweight | Women's wallets, premium card holders |
| Buffalo | Buffalo | 1.2–1.6 mm | Thick, rugged, pronounced grain | Bags, heavy-duty accessories, rustic products |
| Sheep | Sheep | 0.5–0.8 mm | Very supple, lightweight, delicate | Linings, gloves, select luxury items |
Hardware and components
Hardware is sourced from approved suppliers in the Kolkata hardware market and from pan-India suppliers. Standard options include:
- Zippers: YKK (on request), SBS, and equivalent quality brands. Metal and nylon teeth in various sizes.
- Snap buttons: Spring snap (ring-type) in nickel, brass, antique brass, gunmetal finishes. Size 12.5 mm standard for wallets.
- Magnetic closures: Concealed magnet buttons for wallet flaps and bag closures.
- Buckles and D-rings: Zinc alloy or stainless steel for bags. Finish matched to overall hardware theme.
- Rivets: Double-cap rivets for reinforcement at stress points (strap attachments, handle connections).
Quality control standards
Quality control is structured into five checkpoints, each with defined pass/fail criteria:
- Incoming material inspection: Leather, hardware, linings, and packaging materials are inspected on arrival. Leather is checked for colour, thickness, and surface quality. Hardware is tested for function (zip smoothness, snap strength, buckle mechanism).
- Cutting inspection: Cut pieces are compared against patterns for dimensional accuracy. Grain direction, stretch orientation, and defect placement are verified.
- In-process inspection: During assembly, checks focus on stitching alignment (straight, consistent spacing), edge finishing quality (smooth burnish, even paint), branding placement accuracy (position and depth/clarity), and component alignment (card slots, compartments).
- Final inspection (AQL-based): Finished products undergo sampling inspection per AQL 2.5 (standard) or AQL 1.5 (tighter). Each sampled unit is checked for: all dimensions, all functional elements (every zip, snap, and slot), cosmetic appearance, branding quality, and packaging completeness.
- Pre-shipment verification: Packed cartons are weighed and measured. Representative units are photographed and sent to the buyer for final approval before dispatch.
